GH-700 exam guide: what it covers, who it is for and how to prepare
GH-700 is the exam for the GitHub Certified: Agentic AI Business Professional certification. It tests how product managers, program managers and business analysts use GitHub, GitHub Copilot and agentic workflows to get work done, and how they review and control what AI agents do. An agentic workflow is a set of written instructions that an AI agent follows on its own, on a schedule or when something happens in GitHub, such as a new issue. GitHub maintains the exam and Microsoft provides it. It is in beta as of October 2026.

GH-700 beta discount: 80% off for the first 300 candidates
Microsoft's announcement offers 80% off the exam to the first 300 people who take GH-700 (beta) on or before 9 November 2026. Enter the code GH700B8F5 when you pay during registration. You must take the exam, not only book it, by 9 November. The seats are first come, first served, and the discount is not available in Turkey, Pakistan, India or China.
Only 300 seats are discounted, so check that the code is accepted when you pay before you plan around the lower price.
Who the GH-700 exam is for
The study guide names product managers, program managers, technical project managers and business analysts. You do not need deep software development or coding experience. You do need some experience with generative AI, and it helps to have used GitHub. The guide also expects experience managing projects, products or processes and making decisions about quality, speed, risk and control.
The exam checks that you can use GitHub and GitHub Copilot for business work: plan and track work in GitHub, get reliable output from Copilot, design and run agentic workflows, and stay in control of those workflows through approvals, reviews and monitoring.
What the GH-700 exam covers
The exam has four skill areas. The weights below are the share of exam questions from each area.
| Skill area | Weight | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Use GitHub platform features | 20–25% | Copilot budgets and token usage, organization policies, secrets, governance and privacy controls, responsible AI, branch strategy, choosing models, skills, prompts and instructions, when to use MCP servers, GitHub Projects, issues, pull requests and wikis |
| Enhance productivity by using GitHub Copilot | 20–25% | Choosing a model, managing chat sessions, selecting an agent, @ mentions, slash commands, writing prompts with clear inputs and output format, checkpoints, and creating and controlling custom agents |
| Design and implement agentic workflows and automations | 25–30% | Finding good use cases, breaking them into tasks, decision criteria, workflow files, schedules, permissions and outputs, self-critique loops, triggers, tools, skills and MCP servers |
| Perform human-in-the-loop tasks for agentic workflows | 20–25% | Where a person must decide, interactive, plan and autopilot modes, escalation paths, approving, rejecting or revising agent work, fixing failed runs, stopping a run, and reviewing and monitoring runs |
Most questions cover generally available features. The study guide says preview features can appear if they are commonly used.
Every line of the study guide is explained in plain English in the GH-700 study guide, with a free lesson for each skill area.
Terms you will see in GH-700 questions
- Copilot CLI: GitHub Copilot in the terminal, where you type requests and Copilot runs commands.
- Copilot cloud agent: the Copilot that works on a task in the background and opens a pull request for you to review.
- Custom agent: a saved Copilot setup with its own instructions and list of allowed tools that your team can pick.
- Agentic workflow: a Markdown file in the repository with instructions an AI agent follows on a schedule or when something happens in GitHub. It runs in GitHub Actions.
- Copilot automation: a separate Copilot feature, set up in the repository settings, that starts Copilot cloud agent with a saved prompt when a trigger fires.
- MCP server: a connector that gives Copilot access to an outside tool or data source, using the Model Context Protocol.
- Human-in-the-loop: the points where a person approves, rejects, corrects or stops what an agent does.
Is GH-700 hard if you are not a developer?
You will not write code, but you are expected to know how GitHub works. Questions about workflow files, triggers, permissions and pull requests are easy for someone who uses GitHub every week and hard for someone who has only read about it. The largest skill area, agentic workflows, is also the newest, and parts of it are still changing.
If you have not used GitHub before, spend a few hours in a test repository first: create a project and an issue, open and link a pull request, chat with Copilot, and run one agentic workflow. Then take a practice test to find your weak areas.

GH-700 exam FAQs
How many questions are on the GH-700 exam?
Microsoft does not publish a fixed number for GH-700. You have 100 minutes, and Microsoft says most of its certification exams typically have 40 to 60 questions. Questions can include interactive tasks, and the same page links to Microsoft's free exam sandbox, where you can try the question formats before exam day.
What is the passing score for GH-700?
700 on a scale of 1 to 1,000. This is a scaled score, not a percentage.
When do GH-700 beta results come out?
Not straight away. Microsoft's announcement says beta rescoring starts when the exam goes live, with final results about 10 days later, and it expects general availability in December 2026. The certification page gives about eight weeks after the beta ends.
Is there an official GH-700 practice assessment?
The certification page says no training is available for this exam. It also points to a practice assessment on Microsoft's AI Skills Navigator, but that link goes to the AI Business Professional credential, not GH-700. Check the page before relying on it.
Are there GH-700 exam dumps?
Sites that sell "real exam questions" are selling recalled exam content, which breaks the Microsoft exam agreement and can get a result revoked. For a beta exam, they are also mostly guesswork. The practice questions on this site are written from the study guide and GitHub documentation, not from the exam.

No. Timo is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by GitHub or Microsoft. Always confirm exam details on Microsoft Learn.
